Cycling the Eastern Algarve from Cacela Velha: Coast, Lagoon and Hills

Desporto

Cacela Velha is the ideal base for cycling in Eastern Algarve: the Ecovia coastal trail, the Barrocal climbs and the mild winter climate that draws cyclists from across Northern Europe.

The Algarve has established itself as one of Europe's leading destinations for road cycling, mountain biking and cycle tourism. And at the heart of this movement lies a zone still off the radar of the big organised rides: the Eastern Algarve, with Cacela Velha as its natural starting point.

Whether you're following the Ecovia do Litoral that hugs the coast, riding the empty secondary roads that climb into the Barrocal, or exploring the MTB trails of the inland hills, Cacela Velha has everything to win over any cyclist.

The Ecovia do Litoral: The Route That Hugs the Coast

The Ecovia do Litoral is the Algarve's main cycling corridor, running from Cabo de São Vicente all the way to the Spanish border at Vila Real de Santo António — over 200 kilometres of cycle-friendly route that passes right beside Cacela Velha.

In the Eastern Algarve, this trail winds through breathtaking scenery: the Ria Formosa lagoon with its network of water channels, the dunes separating the lagoon from the ocean, saltpans and traditional fishing villages. The difficulty is low, the tarmac is decent and traffic is almost non-existent.

Suggested routes from Cacela Velha:
  • Westward to Tavira (~30 km): Almost entirely flat, with a mandatory stop at Ilha de Tavira

  • Eastward to Vila Real de Santo António (~25 km): Passing through Monte Gordo and the Guadiana estuary

  • Across the Spanish border: Spain has an extensive cycle network in the Huelva region

This is the perfect ride for families, couples or groups who prefer cycling as a way to explore the landscape at a relaxed pace.

The Barrocal and Hills Challenge: For Serious Cyclists

For road cyclists and mountain bikers looking for a proper workout, Cacela Velha is the ideal base for climbing into the Algarve interior.

Road Climbs

From Vila Nova de Cacela (the modern village just a few kilometres from the historic hamlet), several quiet secondary roads climb into the Barrocal with steady gradients:

  • EN122 to Alcoutim: One of Eastern Algarve's most iconic climbs. 40 km of winding road with up to 400 m of elevation gain, through cork oaks, carob trees and olive groves. Almost no traffic.

  • Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo: A short but demanding climb with panoramic views over the Ria Formosa and the coastline.

  • Castro Marim and the Natural Park: A 60–80 km loop combining the coastal plain with the park's rolling hills, passing the impressive Fortress of Castro Marim.

MTB and Trails

The Eastern Algarve interior has a network of dirt tracks almost invisible on conventional maps. Trails through centuries-old olive groves, red-earth descents and views over streams flowing into the Guadiana. For GPS-equipped riders with good navigation skills, it's paradise.

Why in Winter? The Secret of the Professional Cyclists

The Algarve's winter climate explains why professional teams and amateurs from across Northern Europe come here between November and March:

  • Average temperature: 15–20°C (when Northern Europe is at -5°C)

  • Rainfall: Concentrated in December and January, with many sunny days even in winter

  • Empty roads: The beach tourists have gone, the roads are almost deserted

  • No bitter wind: The coastal microclimate shields riders from the major Atlantic cold fronts

It's no coincidence that Dutch, Belgian, British and German teams have made the Algarve their winter training ground for decades. And increasingly, Cacela Velha is appearing on their routes — away from the traffic of Portimão and Lagos, but with the same sun and the same endless kilometres of tarmac.
