Discover the best golf courses in Eastern Algarve — Monte Rei, Quinta da Ria and more — just minutes from Cacela Velha, far from the crowds of Vilamoura.
Ask a foreign golfer where to play golf in the Algarve and you'll almost certainly hear two names: Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago. Understandable — they're established destinations, backed by decades of marketing. But those who have played on the Sotavento, the easternmost stretch of the region, know it holds an inconvenient truth for the rest of the Algarve: some of Portugal's — and Europe's — finest courses are not in Vilamoura. They're just a few minutes from Cacela Velha.
This is where golf is still played without crowds, with views over the Ria Formosa lagoon instead of stacked apartment blocks, and where the day doesn't end at the clubhouse 19th hole — it ends on a terrace overlooking the sea, eating oysters.
Far Beyond Vilamoura: the Undiscovered Sotavento
The Sotavento — the stretch between Tavira and the Spanish border — is the least over-developed golfing area in the Algarve. It has fewer courses than the Barlavento, but those it has compete, without exaggeration, with the best in the country. And Cacela Velha, with its central position between Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, is the perfect base to explore them all without long drives.
Premium Courses Just Minutes from Cacela Velha
Monte Rei Golf & Country Club is the name every serious golfer recognises. The North course, signed by Jack Nicklaus, is consistently voted the best course in Portugal by Golf Digest and has featured on the world's top 100 list. It's a signature course — one of very few in Europe — designed by the "Golden Bear" himself, with dramatic elevation changes creating spectacular views at every hole. Located around 15 minutes' drive from Cacela Velha, towards Vila Nova de Cacela.
Practical note: Monte Rei is undergoing refurbishment works between April and mid-September 2026 — confirm availability before planning your visit.
Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima may be the secret within the secret: these two 18-hole courses sit practically next to Cacela Velha, within the Natural Park of Ria Formosa. Quinta da Ria offers direct views over Cacela Velha beach and the Atlantic Ocean — few courses in the world let you play with scenery like this in sight. Quinta de Cima, the championship course, is more technical, with lakes and long fairways. Both are 5–10 minutes from Cacela Velha.
Castro Marim Golfe & Country Club offers 27 holes divided into three 9-hole loops, with views over the Guadiana river and the Sapal nature reserve. Located near the historic village of Castro Marim and its Moorish castle, around 20 minutes from Cacela Velha.
Benamor Golf, in Conceição de Tavira, is an 18-hole course designed by Sir Henry Cotton, built around the ancient chapel of Quinta de Benamor. Shorter and less physically demanding, it's an excellent option for a more relaxed day of golf, with olive, carob and almond trees lining the fairways. Around 20–25 minutes from Cacela Velha.
(Approximate road distances — always check the map before planning your golf day.)
To make the most of these courses, hire a car at Faro Airport — 40 minutes from Cacela Velha — and arrive in the Sotavento with complete freedom to move between them.
The 19th Hole: the real one is in Cacela Velha
This is where Cacela Velha becomes unbeatable as a base. After a day on the course, most resorts offer a clubhouse. Cacela Velha offers a whitewashed village on a cliff, with a 16th-century fortress and direct views over the Ria Formosa. Swap the clubhouse burger for oysters and clams at A Fábrica, and close the day watching the sunset by the fortress walls — with the morning's golf course still visible in the distance, across the lagoon.
It's this balance between high-level sport and authentic Algarve lifestyle that makes Cacela Velha a golf destination unlike anything else in the region.
