Cacela Velha is one of the most isolated and preserved villages in the Algarve — and that's precisely what makes it special. Getting there is part of the experience.
✈️ From Faro Airport
Faro Airport (FAO) is the entry point for most international visitors. There are several ways to reach Cacela Velha from there:
- Rental car — the most convenient option with the most freedom. You can compare and book your car at Faro Airport here. The journey takes about 45 min via the A22.
- Private transfer — if you prefer to arrive worry-free, you can book a direct transfer from the airport with Welcome Pickups, or see taxis and shuttles with Kiwitaxi — a direct transfer usually costs between €55 and €70.
- Train + taxi — the airport bus takes you to Faro Station; from there take a Regional train to Altura station, then a taxi or Uber to Cacela Velha.
🚗 By Car — The Most Practical Option
The vast majority of visitors arrive by car, and for good reason: the flexibility is unmatched. The village is about 45 minutes from Faro Airport and 15 minutes from the Spanish border.
Via the A22 (Via do Infante), take the Altura / Vila Nova de Cacela exit and follow the signs. The road ends at a small car park at the entrance to the village — beyond that, access is exclusively on foot.

Tip: At peak summer (July and August), the car park fills up before 10am. Arrive early, or park in Vila Nova de Cacela and walk through the fields (about 20 minutes on an easy trail).
🚂 By Train + Taxi
Coming from Lisbon, the Alfa Pendular or Intercidades train takes about 2h30 to reach Faro. Check schedules and book your Lisbon → Faro train ticket on Omio.
From Faro, take a Regional train to Altura station (±25 min). From there, a taxi or Uber takes you to Cacela Velha in about 8 minutes.
Alternative: get off at Tavira (larger station, more taxis available) and continue by taxi or EVA bus to Cacela Velha (±20 min). You can also book a private transfer from Faro with Kiwitaxi.
🚌 By EVA Bus
EVA Transportes operates the Faro–Vila Real de Santo António line with a stop at Vila Nova de Cacela. From there to the village is about 2 km along a rural track — a pleasant walk on mild days. Frequency is reduced outside high season, so it's worth checking schedules at eva-bus.com in advance.
⛵ By Boat — The Most Memorable Way
To reach Cacela Velha beach directly, the most special option is to cross the Ria Formosa by boat from Manta Rota. Local boatmen make the crossing for a few euros, mainly available from June to September. The trip takes about 10 minutes and offers a unique perspective on the channels, barrier islands and lagoon vegetation.
