For many, Cacela Velha beach is the most beautiful beach in Portugal. A practically untouched barrier island, with no roads, no bars, no sunbeds for hire — just fine sand, crystal-clear water and the sound of the Atlantic.
Getting There
The only way to reach Cacela Velha beach is by boat. Local boatmen cross the ria from Sítio da Fábrica (free parking by the quay) for a few euros. The crossing takes about 10 minutes.
The service runs mainly from June to September. Out of season, the crossing may not be available or may be more sporadic — check on the spot.
For a fuller experience with a guide on the Ria Formosa, see the boat tours available on GetYourGuide — there are half-day and full-day options with a stop at the beach.
What to Expect
The beach is completely wild. There are no facilities, kiosks, toilets or rental services. Bring everything you need: water, food, sun cream, a parasol. The sand is fine and golden; the water is relatively calm on the ria side but can have breaking waves on the open-sea side.
Along the island you can walk for kilometres without meeting anyone. It is one of the quietest beaches in the Algarve, even at the height of summer.
