Tavira Island is perhaps the most famous beach in the East Algarve. One of the largest barrier islands of the Ria Formosa, with very long beaches, crystal-clear water and an atmosphere that mixes the wild with a little comfort.
Getting There
Tavira Island can only be reached by boat. There are two main departure points:
- Quatro Águas quay — regular ferry from April to October (faster, 10 min). Access by car from Tavira.
- Tavira harbour — small boats from the historic centre of Tavira (more picturesque, 20 min).
From Cacela Velha, Tavira Island is about 25 minutes by car to Quatro Águas.
The Island
The island is about 11 km long and is largely deserted. The area near the quay has restaurants, bars and beach facilities. Further west, as you move away from the quay, the beach becomes progressively wilder and quieter.
The water is typically clear and fairly calm, making Tavira Island ideal for families with young children. The dunes are protected — there are wooden walkways to reach the beach.
