Cacela Velha in Literature and the Arts: Poets and Poetry

Roteiros

Cacela Velha and poetry: the poet Ibn Darraj al-Qastalli, streets named after poets, the Poesia na Rua festival, the Guadiana Poets meeting and the music of the Noites da Moura Encantada. Only confirmed authors and events, with dates, and what I did not find.

Cacela Velha has a strong link with poetry, and this guide covers what I could confirm in sources: the medieval poet Ibn Darraj al-Qastalli, the streets named after poets, the Poesia na Rua festival and other gatherings. I only name authors and events I found in dated sources, and I say what I did not find, such as novels set in the village or painters linked to it.

Quick answer

  • The village's poet: Ibn Darraj al-Qastalli, born in Cacela in 958, according to Postal (30 June 2025); he died in 1030 (Wikipedia). The history of Cacela Velha tells his story.
  • Poets' streets: Postal says the street signs carry the names of poets who wrote about Cacela or were inspired by it: Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Eugénio de Andrade and Abû al-'Abdarî (Postal).
  • Poesia na Rua: a free festival by Vila Real de Santo António town hall with the Cacela Heritage Information and Research Centre; in 2011 it ran on 15 and 16 July, the second time the village hosted it (DN).
  • Guadiana Poets: a meeting of about 40 poets from both sides of the border, on 29 September 2019 (Jornal do Algarve).
  • Music and arts: the Noites da Moura Encantada, in July, and the "Clássica em Cacela" concert series in the church, according to English Wikipedia.
  • I did not find: novels set in Cacela Velha, painters linked to the village, or current dates for Poesia na Rua.

Ibn Darraj al-Qastalli

The village's most famous poet was born in Cacela in 958 (year 347 of the Hegira) and died in 1030, according to Postal and Wikipedia (Postal; Wikipedia). There is a book about him by Ahmed Tahiri (2009), published by Vila Real de Santo António town hall and the al-Idrisi Foundation, 74 pages (Wikipedia; summary). DN (2011) says the square where the Poesia na Rua festivities take place bears the poet's name (DN).

Streets named after poets

According to Postal (30 June 2025), quoting the Oliraf blog, the village's street signs carry the names of poets who wrote about Cacela or were inspired by it: Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Eugénio de Andrade and the Andalusian poet Abû al-'Abdarî (Postal). I did not confirm the exact street names or whether there are poems on the walls today. See the walk through the village.

  • 2011: on 15 and 16 July, with an evening poetry recital with seventeen readers, and concerts. DN mentions poems on fabric on the whitewashed walls, on fences and on clotheslines, and says you could find a poem by each of the poets Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Eugénio de Andrade, Adolfo da Conceição Gago and Teresa Rita Lopes (DN).

Guadiana Poets

On 29 September 2019, about 40 poets from Huelva, Seville, Ayamonte and the Algarve met near the fortress of Cacela Velha (Jornal do Algarve, 4 October 2019). I found no later editions.

Music and other arts

  • Noites da Moura Encantada: in 2025, from 11 to 13 July, with free entry, it included live music, dance, theatre, a souk, the puppet theatre "A Lenda das Amendoeiras em Flor" at Largo da Fortaleza and Al-Andalus music in the church (Barlavento).
