Keep in mind: it is the busiest, most touristy area; more "resort" than "village".

Cabanas de Tavira (about 10 to 15 minutes): the ria and the boats

Tavira (about 20 minutes): historic charm and good food
A riverside town of white churches and a Roman bridge, with Tavira Island a short boat ride away. A town planned in the 18th century, on the Guadiana river facing Spain, with good shops, restaurants and transport, including a train station. It is a practical base for exploring the whole East Algarve and, if you like, crossing by ferry to Ayamonte. Look out for the Pousada de Vila Real de Santo António.
Best for: travellers without a car, trips to Spain, short stays.

6 tips for booking better
- Book early for July and August. It is the peak season; June and September have more availability and are still beach months.
- Choose free-cancellation rates until your flights and car are confirmed.
- A car is almost essential for the farm stays, Manta Rota and most areas. Compare rental prices from Faro Airport.
- Check parking, especially in the historic centre of Tavira.
- Check for air conditioning in July and August: not all holiday rentals have it.
- Read the real distance to the beach: "300 m" in Altura or Manta Rota is very different from "3 km".
