Where to watch the sunset in Cacela Velha, what time the sun sets each month (calculated), in which direction, how to avoid the parking problem and what I could not confirm. With dated sources.
The official website of the Ria Formosa Natural Park describes Cacela Velha as a white village on a cliff overlooking the lagoon and mentions one of the most beautiful sunsets in the Algarve (Ria Formosa). This guide covers where to watch the sunset, calculated times month by month and what to plan, and separates what is confirmed from what I could not verify.
Quick answer
- Where: the churchyard and the square, with a view over the lagoon. According to Wikipedia, the churchyard has a wide view over the Ria Formosa and extends westward. A travel blog also names it as the best spot to see the sun set (Viajar entre Viagens).
- What time: in 2027, the sun sets around 17:13 in December and 20:51 in June (table below, calculated by me).
- Winter time: on 25 October 2026 the clocks go back one hour; sunset becomes about an hour earlier on the clock (RFM).
- Parking: the car park at the village entrance is free and small and, in July and August, it fills before 10:00. A blog says parking is hard in summer, especially at sunset (Viajar entre Viagens). See how to get to Cacela Velha.
- Access: the village is open every day, at any hour, according to Postal (26 March 2024).
- Not confirmed: lighting in the village after dark, opening hours of restaurants at sunset and tour prices.
Sunset times
These are approximate sunset times in Cacela Velha, in mainland Portugal's legal time (WET in winter, WEST in summer). I calculated them with the NOAA algorithm for the village's coordinates and checked them against the sunrise-sunset.org API on several dates: the difference was at most 1 minute. They do not account for terrain or buildings on the horizon and vary by about a minute from year to year.
- 15 January: 17:35
- 15 February: 18:08
- 15 March: 18:36
- 15 April: 20:04
- 15 May: 20:30
- 15 June: 20:51
- 15 July: 20:50
- 15 August: 20:23
- 15 September: 19:39
- 15 October: 18:54
- 15 November: 17:20
- 15 December: 17:13
The change to summer time in 2027 is due on 28 March (RFM). The nicest light often starts before sunset: arriving 30 to 45 minutes early is my own suggestion, not a rule.

Which way the sun sets
According to my calculation, the sun sets at about 241 degrees (south-west) in December and about 300 degrees (north-west) in June, measured clockwise from north. Tavira lies about 249 degrees from Cacela Velha. In practice, in winter the sun disappears in the direction of Tavira and the lagoon; in summer, further north, over land. These angles are calculated, not measured on site.
Where to watch
- Churchyard and square: the most quoted spot. See the walk through the village.
- Miradouro da Fábrica: in Sítio da Fábrica, next to Cacela Velha, with views over the lagoon, according to Lifecooler (an undated page that I could not open to confirm). See Fábrica beach.
- By boat: there are sunset trips from Tavira and Faro; see the sunset tours. One listing on a booking platform includes Cacela Velha among the stops of a catamaran trip from Tavira; check the route and time with the operator.

Planning your visit
- Arrive early: for the parking reasons above.
- Tides: the lagoon changes a lot with the tide. See the tides at Cacela Velha.
- Dinner: Casa da Igreja does not take reservations, according to Postal (30 June 2025), so there may be a wait (Casa da Igreja). See also Restaurante Casa Velha and where to eat in Cacela Velha.
- Getting back: I found no information on lighting in the village after dark; bring a torch.
