• Certificate of legal capacity to marry for each foreign partner, issued by the authorities of the home country less than 6 months ago.
• Two witnesses and, if the couple does not speak Portuguese, an interpreter.

Once the process is approved, the couple normally has six months to marry. The rules are the same for different-sex and same-sex couples. 2. Getting married in Cacela Velha's church

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, on Rua de Cacela Velha, dates back to the 13th century, of which a small Gothic portal remains. The current structure is from the 16th century, rebuilt in the 18th, and has a Renaissance portal.

• How to start: contact the Cacela Parish (phone +351 281 370 377) to check that your date is available.
• Process: the Catholic marriage process is prepared in the parish of one of the spouses. They normally ask for baptism and confirmation certificates and a declaration of freedom to marry. Start about six months ahead.
• Civil validity: a Catholic marriage has civil effects.
• Same-sex couples: the Catholic Church does not celebrate these marriages. The alternative is a civil marriage followed by a symbolic ceremony with an independent celebrant.

3. Getting married on the beach

A beach ceremony needs authorisation from the maritime authority (the Capitania) and, where relevant, from the beach concessionaire. Start at least 30 days ahead. Decorations and marking out the space may be refused, especially on very popular beaches.

Some practical points:
