Pet-friendly guide to Cacela Velha and the eastern Algarve: places to stay that accept pets on Booking.com, the beach rules for dogs, paperwork, health and summer alternatives.
Cacela Velha is one of the prettiest villages in the Algarve and it suits travellers with a dog: it is small, quiet and almost entirely pedestrian. What surprises many people is the beach rules on the Sotavento coast, which are stricter than elsewhere in the country. This guide covers what to know before you go, with places to stay that accept pets according to Booking.com.

- In the village: walk freely, on a lead. It takes half a morning and is effortless.
- On the beaches in bathing season (normally June to September): the coastal management regulation bans pets on the beaches between Vilamoura and Vila Real de Santo António. That includes Tavira, Cabanas, Cacela Velha, Manta Rota, Altura, Praia Verde and Monte Gordo.
- Outside bathing season: the ban does not apply, but keep the dog on a lead and follow the signs at each beach.
- Summer alternative: the dog beach at Canela, in Ayamonte (Spain), about 40 minutes by car.

Cacela Velha with a dog: the village
The square, the cobbled streets and the viewpoint by the fort are all walkable at an easy pace, and a dog will do fine. A few tips:
- Arrive in the morning. By midday the ground is hot and there is little shade outside the square.
- Bring water and a bowl. Do not count on finding drinking points along the way.
- Short lead and pick up after your dog. Both are compulsory in public spaces.

Beaches and dogs: the rule that surprises most people
On the coast between Vilamoura and Vila Real de Santo António, the coastal management plan (the POOC, approved by Council of Ministers Resolution 103/2005 and amended in 2016) bans pets in the bathing areas during the bathing season. The rule applies to beaches in general, with or without a concession, and the only exception is certified assistance dogs.
In practice, in summer you cannot take your dog to Manta Rota beach, Cacela Velha beach (across the lagoon), Tavira Island, Altura, Praia Verde or Monte Gordo. The exact dates of the bathing season are set every year by a notice, normally June to September.
Two useful notes:
- If you read elsewhere that "beach X accepts dogs", double-check. The notice posted at the beach and the local council take precedence.
- The Ria Formosa is a bird protection area (Natura 2000). In any season, keep your dog on a lead and avoid the marked dune and salt marsh areas.
What to do:
- From October to May, when the ban is not in force, you can walk your dog on the beaches, always on a lead and following the signs. This is the best time if you want beach days with a dog. See when to visit Cacela Velha.
- In summer, the Canela dog beach, in the Canela Natural Area (Ayamonte), is open all year, with bag dispensers and bins. It is across the Guadiana, about 40 minutes by car from Cacela Velha.

At these places, Booking.com says pets are accepted. Mostly it is "on request" and charges may apply, so always let the property know in advance. A house or villa with outdoor space is usually more practical than a hotel room.

What to ask before booking
- How many pets and what size? Some places limit the number or size.
- What does it cost? Ask whether there is a nightly fee or a deposit.
- Where is the dog allowed? Room, pool, garden, terrace.
- Can it be left alone in the property? Many places do not allow it.
- Is there shade, air conditioning and outdoor space? In summer it makes a difference.
Health, paperwork and safety
- Documents: travel within the European Union requires a microchipped dog, a valid rabies vaccination and an EU pet passport. From the UK you need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC), issued in the 10 days before travel, and a tapeworm treatment before you return. Check the current rules on your government's website.
- Potentially dangerous breeds: in Portugal they must be on a short lead and muzzled in public. For short holiday stays, meeting the health rules is enough. Check the breed list on the DGAV website.
- Heat: pavements and sand burn paws. Walk early in the morning or in the evening and never leave your dog in the car.
- Leishmaniasis: a disease spread by sandflies, present in the Algarve and most active from March to October. Talk to your vet before travelling about repellent collars or spot-ons.
