Faro Airport to Cacela Velha: Car, Train or Transfer

Roteiros

Faro Airport to Cacela Velha is about 55 km and 45 minutes to 1 hour by car. Compare hire car, private transfer, and train plus bus, with official dated sources and what I could not confirm.

Faro Airport to Cacela Velha is about 55 km and between 45 minutes and 1 hour by car. There are four ways to do it: hire car, private transfer, train plus bus, and taxi. This guide compares them using official, dated sources and says what I could not confirm. I did not make the journey for this article.

Quick answer

  • Distance: 54.9 km to the village and 42.9 km to Tavira. The OSRM estimate (OpenStreetMap data, without traffic, 27 October 2026) gives 62 and 53 minutes; people who do the drive mention 45 to 55 minutes to the village, depending on traffic and route.
  • Tolls: the A22 (Via do Infante) stopped charging tolls on 1 January 2025 (Rádio Renascença; Observador confirms it in April 2026).
  • Car: the airport website lists six companies with desks before security: Avis-Budget, Europcar, Goldcar, Guerin, Hertz and Sixt (ANA). To compare prices, see car hire at Faro Airport.
  • Transfer: Algar Vip Travel runs private transfers with a driver from the airport.
  • Train: bus from the airport to Faro centre, then a regional train Faro → Cacela in about 46 to 50 minutes (CP timetable of 19 July 2026). From the station to the village is about 2 km as the crow flies.
  • Not confirmed: the current price and times of bus 14/16, the taxi fare, and the price of a transfer to the village.

By hire car

This is the most flexible option if you also want to see Tavira, Manta Rota or Castro Marim. The airport website says the hire companies have desks before security and gives each one's hours: Avis-Budget 7:00 to 23:00, Europcar, Guerin and Hertz 7:00 to midnight, Goldcar and Sixt 6:00 to midnight (ANA). • Route: along the A22, toll-free since 1 January 2025, towards Vila Real de Santo António. For the exit and the last stretch, see how to get to Cacela Velha.
  • Parking in the village: the car park at the entrance is free and small and fills before 10:00 in July and August. See Cacela Velha in summer.

By private transfer

A pre-booked transfer means you do not drive after the flight. Algar Vip Travel runs transfers with a driver from Faro Airport and lists Vila Nova de Cacela among the available places. On its website, "from" prices to Tavira hotels were 60 to 62 euros on 21 October 2026; always ask for a quote for your destination. The site states free cancellation up to 24 hours before and 30 minutes of courtesy waiting time.

By train

There is no train at the airport, so the journey has three parts:

  1. Airport → Faro: the airport website lists Próximo buses, lines 14 and 16, between the airport and Faro centre (ANA); timetables are on the Próximo website. Third-party guides give 15 to 20 minutes to the station and a ticket paid to the driver. I did not find the current official fare.
  2. Faro → Cacela: regional train on the Algarve Line, in about 46 to 50 minutes. In the CP timetable of 19 July 2026, trains leave for example at 7:00 (arriving 7:46) and 7:56 (arriving 8:46); the last one in the table leaves Faro at 22:10 and arrives at 22:56 (CP). Not all run every day, so check your travel date.
  3. Station → village: the station is in Vila Nova de Cacela, about 2 km as the crow flies from the village (Baixo Guadiana). The walking route is longer and I did not find an official figure. See Cacela Velha without a car.

Adding up the bus, the wait, the train and the last stretch, allow more than 2 hours; this is my own estimate, not a timetable.

By taxi

Taxis wait outside the airport, but I did not find official fares for the trip to Cacela Velha. Ask the driver for the price before setting off, or book a transfer.

Which to choose

This is my own suggestion:

  • You want to explore the area: hire car.
  • You arrive tired or late: pre-booked transfer.
  • You do not drive and have time: bus and train, and sleep in Tavira, 13 minutes by train. See where to stay in Tavira.
  • You are landing in Seville: see Seville to Cacela Velha. The Faro airport website lists Rede Expressos bus connections between the airport and Seville (ANA).
  • You are coming from Lisbon by land: see Lisbon to Cacela Velha.
