Cacela Velha Without a Car: Train, Bus and Taxi

Como Chegar

How to reach Cacela Velha without a car: CP train to Cacela station (Algarve Line), Vamus bus and private transfer. With times taken from the CP timetables and what to check before you travel.

You can reach Cacela Velha without a car, but you need to plan the last stretch: the train station is in Vila Nova de Cacela, not in the village. This guide covers what you can do by train, bus and transfer, with times taken from the CP timetables and what to check before you travel.

Quick answer

  • Train: the Algarve Line has a station at Cacela, between Conceição and Castro Marim. According to the CP regional timetable in force since 19 July 2026, trains run Faro → Cacela in about 46 to 50 minutes and Tavira → Cacela in about 13 minutes.
  • Altura: there is no Altura station in that timetable. Between Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António the stations are Porta Nova, Conceição, Cacela, Castro Marim and Monte Gordo.
  • Station → village: about 2 km in a straight line, calculated from the coordinates of the station and the village. The walk is longer; I did not find an official figure.
  • Bus: the Algarve intermunicipal concession runs under the Vamus brand. The planner on its site lists a "Cacela Velha" stop, the closest to the village, and another in Vila Nova de Cacela ("Cacela (Largo da Camponesa)"); I could not confirm timetables.
  • Transfer: Algar Vip Travel offers private transfers with a driver from Faro airport and lists Vila Nova de Cacela among its locations.

By train

Cacela station serves the town of Vila Nova de Cacela, in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, on the Algarve Line (Baixo Guadiana).

Times in the CP regional timetable (19 July 2026) (CP):

  • Faro → Cacela: for example, 7:00 → 7:46 and 7:56 → 8:46. The last train in the table leaves Faro at 22:10 and reaches Cacela at 22:56.
  • Tavira → Cacela: about 13 minutes (for example, 7:33 → 7:46).
  • Cacela → Vila Real de Santo António: about 12 minutes (for example, 7:46 → 7:58).
  • Cacela → Castro Marim: about 5 minutes.

Not all trains run every day: the timetable separates daily services, Monday to Friday and weekend services. Check your travel date on the CP website.

From Lisbon: in the 19 July 2026 timetable (CP), the Alfa Pendular leaves Lisboa Oriente at 8:23 and reaches Faro at 11:27, about 3 hours; the Intercidades at 10:02 reaches Faro at 13:31. In Faro, the InterRegional train at 11:57 reaches Cacela at 12:46. Connections are only guaranteed under normal operating conditions. See also the guide from Lisbon to Cacela Velha.

By bus

The Vamus Algarve planner lists a stop called "Cacela Velha", the closest to the village, and another, "Cacela (Largo da Camponesa)", in Vila Nova de Cacela. Vamus is the brand under which EVA Transportes, through its subsidiary Vizur, took over the Algarve intermunicipal concession from December 2021 (Barlavento). An independent guide lists line 67 as the main link Faro – Olhão – Tavira – Vila Real de Santo António (Algarve South Portugal).

I could not confirm timetables or prices. Check the planner before you travel and make sure there is a service on your day and time.

By taxi or transfer

  • Private transfer: Algar Vip Travel runs transfers with a driver from Faro airport and lists Faro Airport, Tavira, Manta Rota and Vila Nova de Cacela among its locations. On its site, "from" prices for Tavira hotels from the airport were 60 to 62 euros on 21 October 2026; always ask for a quote for your destination. The site states free cancellation up to 24 hours before and 30 minutes of courtesy waiting.
  • Taxi: the Baixo Guadiana page for Cacela station lists taxis among nearby transport. I did not find official fares for the station → village stretch.

Staying without a car

Choose a base with a train: Tavira has more accommodation and restaurants and is 13 minutes away by train, which makes it the most practical base. See where to stay in Tavira and Booking.com. If you prefer to stay near the village, see where to stay in Cacela Velha and Booking.com; ask your accommodation how to get there from the station. To compare all areas, read where to stay near Cacela Velha.
