Cacela Velha in summer: heat, rain and hours of sun according to IPMA (Faro), sunset, Blue Flag beaches, rules for dogs, parking and July and August events. With dated sources and what I could not confirm.

Summer is the hottest, busiest and liveliest season in Cacela Velha, and also the one that needs the most care: small parking, no permanent lifeguard on the beach in front of the village and rules for dogs. This guide covers what I could confirm with dated sources and says what I could not confirm. I did not visit the village in summer for this article.

Quick answer

  • Heat: at the Faro station (IPMA, 1991-2020), the average maximum temperature is 29.4 °C in July and 29.2 °C in August; on average, 13.1 days in July and 12.4 in August reach 30 °C or more (IPMA). Cacela Velha is about 50 km by road from Faro (OSRM, 22 October 2026), so local values may differ.
  • Rain: almost none, with 0.9 mm in July and 3.0 mm in August (IPMA, Faro, 1991-2020).
  • Sunset: around 20:51 in mid-June, 20:50 in mid-July, 20:23 in mid-August and 19:39 in mid-September (my own calculation, in the sunset guide).
  • Beach: Manta Rota has a Blue Flag in 2026 according to ABAAE, with a bathing season from 1 June to 30 September and a Blue Flag season from 15 June to 30 September.
  • Dogs: banned from bathing areas during the bathing season; see dog-friendly Cacela Velha.
  • Parking: the car park at the village entrance is free and small and fills before 10:00 in July and August.
  • Not confirmed: the water temperature at Cacela Velha, boat prices and times in 2026, and the dates of 2027 events.

Heat, rain and sun

I used the official IPMA climate normals for the Faro station, for 1991-2020 (IPMA). The station is at the airport, at 5 m altitude, not in Cacela Velha.

  • June: average maximum 26.8 °C, average minimum 17.8 °C, 5.3 days with a maximum of 30 °C or more, 5.1 mm of rain.
  • July: average maximum 29.4 °C, average minimum 19.6 °C, 13.1 days with a maximum of 30 °C or more, 0.9 mm of rain.
  • August: average maximum 29.2 °C, average minimum 19.9 °C, 12.4 days with a maximum of 30 °C or more, 3.0 mm of rain.
  • September: average maximum 26.4 °C, average minimum 18.3 °C, 3.2 days with a maximum of 30 °C or more, 21.5 mm of rain.

Tropical nights (minimum of 20 °C or more) average 12.9 in July and 14.9 in August. The highest value recorded in July was 44.3 °C, on 25 July 2004. As for sun, IPMA's older normals for Faro (1971-2000, with data from 1971-1995) give 360.6 hours in July and 344.9 in August (IPMA); the latest period does not publish this figure.

What about the sea?

I did not find an official average water temperature for Cacela Velha. Postal (18 August 2024), using Portuguese Navy data, gives a minimum of 21.2 °C and a maximum of 24 °C in August for Altura beach, in Castro Marim (Postal). It is only a neighbouring reference point; check on the day.

Looking after yourself in the heat

During intense heat, the DGS (Portugal's health authority) recommends drinking water even when not thirsty and avoiding alcohol, avoiding direct sun especially between 11:00 and 17:00, using sunscreen of factor 30 or higher and reapplying it every two hours and after swimming, wearing light-coloured clothing, a hat and sunglasses, and not staying in cars parked in the sun (Observador/Lusa, 9 August 2024). These recommendations date from a past heatwave; check the current ones at dgs.pt.

Beaches

  • Manta Rota: with a Blue Flag in 2026 (ABAAE). See what to visit in Manta Rota.
  • Fábrica beach: reached by boat from Sítio da Fábrica. In July 2023, Vila Real de Santo António municipality listed it as a bathing area with a bather assistance service. See the Fábrica beach guide.
  • Beach in front of the village: in 2023, the municipality advised against bathing in the area in front of Cacela Velha, as it is not a bathing area and has no permanent lifeguard (Postal). See the Cacela Velha beach guide.
  • Tide and the ria: do not cross the ria on foot. The municipality and the National Maritime Authority advise against it, and Postal reports repeated rescues (Postal). See the tides in Cacela Velha.
  • Dogs: the coastal plan (POOC) bans pets from bathing areas during the bathing season, according to our dog guide.

Summer events

All of these events change date from year to year and I found no 2027 dates. See the events guide.

  • Summer market (Mercadinho de Verão): Sunday 21 June 2026, 10:30 to 17:30 (ADRIP).
  • Noites da Moura Encantada: 11 to 13 July 2025, 18:00 to 24:00, free entry (Barlavento).
  • São João da Degola, Manta Rota: 24 to 29 August 2025, with the Banho Santo on the 29th (Postal).

Planning a summer day

This is my own suggestion, not a rule.

  1. Arrive before 10:00 because of parking. See how to get to Cacela Velha.
  2. Beach in the morning, then shade, water and rest during the hottest hours, which the DGS puts at 11:00 to 17:00.
  3. Late afternoon in the village: summer sunset is around 20:50 in June and July. See the sunset guide.
  4. Dinner: Casa da Igreja does not take reservations, according to Postal (30 June 2025) (Casa da Igreja). See also where to eat in Cacela Velha.
  5. Without a car: see Cacela Velha without a car.

When to book

July and August are the busiest months; see when to visit Cacela Velha for the lead times we suggest, and the autumn and winter guide if you prefer to avoid the heat.
