How to get from Cacela Velha to Ayamonte, in Spain: by ferry from Vila Real de Santo António or by car over the bridge, with dated prices and times, the time difference and what to see in town. And what I could not confirm.
Ayamonte lies across the Guadiana river, opposite Vila Real de Santo António, and makes a half-day trip from Cacela Velha: a ferry of about 15 minutes, an Andalusian town of white houses and squares, and back to Portugal. This guide covers how to get there, the prices and times I could confirm (with the date of the source), what to see and what remains unconfirmed.
Quick answer
- Ferry: the crossing between Vila Real de Santo António and Ayamonte takes about 15 minutes. According to the operator TFG, a passenger ticket costs 2.50 euros, a child ticket (4 to 10 years) 1.50 euros and a bicycle 1.60 euros. According to Postal (9 March 2026), a car with driver costs 7 euros and tickets are bought at the terminal, on the day, without booking.
- By car: about 21.6 km and 23 minutes from Cacela Velha to Ayamonte's central square, over the international bridge (OSRM estimate with OpenStreetMap data, 22 October 2026).
- Time: Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal; the ferry times published by Ayamonte tourism are in Spanish time (Ayamonte Tourism).
- Street monuments: the monuments page of Ayamonte tourism (statues and open-air monuments) says they can be seen without paying admission (Ayamonte Tourism). I did not find museum prices.
- Not confirmed: how long the ferry timetable published by Ayamonte tourism is valid, restaurants and church opening times.
How to get from Cacela Velha to Ayamonte
- By ferry (on foot or by train): the ferry leaves from Vila Real de Santo António. From Cacela to Vila Real de Santo António there is a train in about 12 minutes in the CP regional timetable in force since 19 July 2026 (for example, 7:46 → 7:58) (CP). I did not find the distance from the station to the quay. See Cacela Velha without a car.
- By car, over the bridge: about 21.6 km and 23 minutes (OSRM). If you drive, you can also leave the car in Vila Real de Santo António and cross by ferry; I did not check parking near the quay.
- Car on the ferry: Postal gives 7 euros per car with driver.
- ID: Portugal and Spain are both in the Schengen area, but always carry valid identification.
- Transfer: Algar Vip Travel, private transfers with a driver from Faro airport. Check with the company whether it runs transfers to Spain.

Ferry timetable
Ayamonte tourism publishes this timetable, in Spanish time (Ayamonte Tourism). The page does not say how long it is valid: check with TFG, which says the service runs every day of the year.

- Plaza de la Laguna: the heart of the town; Wikipedia mentions a tile panel based on a Sorolla painting.
- Plaza de la Ribera: a lively square beside the river.
- Churches: Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias and Iglesia de El Salvador, whose tower can be seen from afar. Ayamonte tourism publishes church hours and Mass times; I did not confirm them.
- Viewpoints: the Mirador del Parador, with views over the Guadiana and Vila Real de Santo António, and the Mirador de la calle Galdames, recommended for sunset.
- Bulevar del Guadiana: a riverside promenade open since January 2022.
- Ecomuseo Molino del Pintado: a museum in a tidal mill. I did not find hours or a price.

Beaches near Ayamonte
Ayamonte tourism mentions two beaches in the municipality, Isla Canela and Punta del Moral, but the page does not give access or the distance from the centre. I did not visit or confirm them: see Ayamonte tourism. On the Portuguese side, Monte Gordo beach is on this side of the river.
A half-day suggestion
This is my own suggestion, without verified times.
- Ferry from Vila Real de Santo António (about 15 minutes).
- A stroll through the centre and Plaza de la Laguna, with a break on a café terrace.
- One church and one viewpoint, depending on the weather.
- Ferry back, adjusting for Spanish and Portuguese time.

Where to eat
Ayamonte tourism has a where to eat page, which mentions fish and seafood, rice dishes and tapas. I did not check restaurants. On the Portuguese side, see where to eat in Cacela Velha and The Flavours of the East Algarve.
