Quick answer
- From Cacela Velha: about 12.6 km and 15 minutes by car (OSRM estimate with OpenStreetMap data, 22 October 2026). By train, Tavira → Cacela takes about 13 minutes in the CP regional timetable in force since 19 July 2026.
- The essentials on foot: the bridge over the Gilão, the castle and Santa Maria do Castelo church, the Misericórdia church and the museums. Visit Tavira suggests a "Vila a Dentro" route of 1.8 km, 30 to 45 minutes, not counting visits (Visit Tavira).
- Tickets: the combined ticket for Palácio da Galeria and the Islamic Museum Nucleus cost 3 euros in October 2026 (Postal). I did not find an official source for the castle admission price.
- The "Roman bridge" is not Roman: according to Visit Tavira, it was long thought to be Roman, but recent studies only confirm that it existed in the medieval period.
- Tavira Island: boat from the centre, with an adult return ticket of 2.50 euros in July 2024 (Postal). Prices and times change: check.
- Not confirmed: the castle's opening hours, the camera obscura's current hours and price, and church opening times.
The bridge over the Gilão river
This is Tavira's postcard view, and it is pedestrian-only. According to Visit Tavira, it has seven arches, is over 80 metres long and about 6.5 metres wide. It had major works around 1655 and a violent flood affected it structurally in 1989. For centuries it was the main overland link along the eastern Algarve coast, according to the same source.
The castle and Santa Maria do Castelo church
The castle stands at the top of Santa Maria hill. According to Visit Tavira, its origins go back at least to the Islamic period (11th century); it was the governor's residence and the last stronghold of the medieval walls. From the walls, the same source says, you get the best view of the town, with the river and the salt pans beyond.
- Walls: according to Wikipedia, sections from several phases survive (Almoravid, Almohad and Christian). The 1755 earthquake badly damaged the castle.
- Conquest: most sources place the Christian conquest of Tavira in 1239, under Paio Peres Correia; others give 1240 or 1242 (Wikipedia).
- Visiting: I did not find the hours or the price in an official source. Unofficial sources say admission is free and hours vary by season: check with the Tourist Office (281 320 558, turismo@cm-tavira.pt, according to Visit Tavira).

Next to it is the Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria do Castelo. According to Visit Tavira, it was built in the 13th century on the site of a former mosque; English Wikipedia adds that no archaeological evidence of that mosque has been found yet (Wikipedia). Inside, Visit Tavira mentions the tomb of the seven knights on the right side of the chancel and the supposed tomb of Paio Peres Correia on the left. I did not find visiting hours.

Misericórdia church and museums
- Misericórdia church: a 16th-century work, one of the most valuable Renaissance buildings in the Algarve, according to Visit Tavira. It has a portal with Our Lady of Mercy, tile panels of the fourteen Works of Mercy and three 18th-century altarpieces. I did not find opening hours.
- Casa Museu da Misericórdia and Núcleo Expositivo de Arte Sacra da Igreja de Santa Maria: according to the municipal museums page, each costs 2 euros, the combined ticket costs 4 euros and the hours are Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00. The page is undated: check.
- Municipal Museum, Palácio da Galeria: opened to the public in 2001 after rehabilitation works and stands on a former Phoenician settlement, where rock-cut wells from the 7th-6th centuries BC were found; the palace dates from at least the 16th century and was largely rebuilt in the 18th (Postal).
- Islamic Museum Nucleus: on Praça da República, it shows the Vaso de Tavira, a Caliphate-period capital and sections of a 12th-century Islamic wall (Postal).
- Hours for both: Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 16:30. The municipal page gave these as "summer hours, until 16 September" and did not list winter hours: check before you go (municipality).
- Others: Casa da Fotografia Andrade cost 5 euros and opened Monday to Friday (10:00-13:00, 15:00-18:00) and on Saturday mornings, according to the same page.

The "Tavira Eye" camera obscura
The former water reservoir, inaugurated in 1931 at the highest point of the town, was turned into an attraction with a viewpoint 30 metres up and the first camera obscura in the Algarve, which projects real-time images of the town onto a screen. According to Postal (29 April 2024), it opened from 11:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday. I did not find a price or current hours: check before you go.
Municipal Market and food
- Municipal Market: on Avenida D. Manuel I; summer hours 6:30 to 14:00 and winter hours 7:30 to 14:00, with stalls for fruit, fish, meat, pastries, cafés and a seafood restaurant (municipality). The municipality mentions a renovation of the market in 2024.
- Where to eat: see food in Tavira, A Ver Tavira and Come na Gaveta, and read The Flavours of the East Algarve.
Tavira Island
The barrier island lies opposite the town, in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. According to Postal (July 2024), the boat from the centre cost 2.50 euros (adult, return) and 1.10 euros (child up to 11); from Cais das Quatro Águas, 1.90 and 1.00 euros. Quatro Águas pier is about 20 minutes' walk from the historic centre or 5 minutes by car, with free parking, according to the same source. Times are extended in summer and I did not confirm them. See the Tavira Island guide.
